Emma and Tim

In the fast-paced world of digital entrepreneurship, the "lone wolf" mentality is often seen as a badge of honour. However, for Emma and Tim, two learners on the Mastered bootcamp, the most valuable tool they acquired wasn’t a piece of software - it was a collaborator.

What began as a peer-review session in a breakout room evolved into a joint project that is now actively streamlining their respective business operations. Their story highlights a side of skills training often overlooked: the power of the network to solve "impossible" logistical problems.

Two different businesses, one shared goal

Based in Leeds, Tim Dunk is a photographer who has traded the traditional studio for the digital frontier. Using remote photography, Tim directs and shoots professional-quality portraits through a client’s smartphone, regardless of their location.

"I help brands that need authentic imagery but face barriers like travel or logistics," Tim explains. "For clothing brands, I solve the 'content gap' by photographing their actual customers in their own homes, resulting in images that feel genuine rather than staged."

Across West Yorkshire, Emma, founder of Cinnamon Daisy, was tackling a different challenge. She designs size-inclusive, beginner-friendly sewing patterns aimed at helping people build body confidence.

"I work with sewists who are tired of clothes not fitting properly or not feeling like them," says Emma. "A lot of my audience has struggled with body confidence or felt left out by standard sizing, so I create patterns that support them in making clothes that fit their bodies as they are right now."

Although their disciplines are different, both are focused on helping people feel seen,  whether that’s through imagery or clothing.

Meeting and recognising the opportunity

The two first crossed paths during their time at Mastered. In a sea of different disciplines, they found common ground in their desire to innovate.

"We were in the same cohort and often paired up in breakout discussion rooms, so we got to know each other’s businesses quite well," Emma recalls. "Mastered encourages you to be an open book, which meant we skipped the small talk and got straight into business challenges. Having others' input into my business struggles was really helpful."

It was during a module on Marketing Strategies and Online Presence that the lightbulb moment occurred. Emma was discussing the difficulty of getting consistent photography from makers scattered across the globe.

Tim remembers the moment well: "Emma’s approach to the Business Model part of the course was so precise. While some were still figuring out their 'why,' Emma was already deep into the 'how',  specifically how to make sewing accessible. I loved her commitment to her makers."

Building a scalable, collaborative solution

The resulting project is a series of remote photoshoots featuring the Cinnamon Daisy sewing community. Emma handles the "front end" - briefing the makers and selecting garments,  while Tim manages the "session end," providing the technical setup, direction, and photography.

"I’m directing the lighting and posing in real-time," Tim explains. "It allows for a global reach that was previously impossible without a massive budget."

The synergy between their skill sets is what makes the project work. While Emma brings the creative vision and deep community connection, Tim ensures those garments are captured beautifully, "regardless of the maker's lighting or phone model."

The impact on both businesses

The partnership has moved from a theoretical classroom discussion to a fully realised commercial success that has professionalised the Cinnamon Daisy web presence.

For Emma: "It has helped me to shine a light on the sewing community and represent all body shapes and sizes. I now have a bank of high-quality images that I use throughout my marketing, helping customers feel seen, which in turn builds more community."

For Tim: "It’s validated the fit for FaceTim within the maker space. It showed me that my audience includes independent creative businesses who value authenticity."

Reflecting on the nature of their partnership, Tim notes: "The best partnerships aren't necessarily between people in the same industry, but between people with the same why. If your values align, the rest usually takes care of itself."

Building a collaborative way of working

Running a business solo can be lonely, but Emma and Tim have found a way to bridge that gap. They still meet once a month for co-working sessions and to bounce ideas off someone who "gets the struggle of being a creative entrepreneur."

When asked what they would say to other learners about building relationships alongside skills, the message is clear:

"Don’t just show up for the curriculum; show up for the people. You can learn business models from a book, but you can’t beat real human partnerships. The real value of a programme like Mastered is the peer-to-peer network. Look for the gap in your business and see who in your cohort has the bridge."

What’s next?

The duo is ready to take this global. Their goal is to scale the collaboration so that for every major Cinnamon Daisy launch, sewists from around the world will be photographed in their handmade garments,  proving that "two Yorkshire-based creatives can create a global impact together."
